Dr. Lawrence S. Lackey Jr's illustrious career in medicine began with his graduation from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1987. Following this, he completed his Internal Medicine residency at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in 1990. As the hospital transitioned to DMC Grace Hospital, Dr. Lackey was chosen to serve as the chief medical resident, playing a pivotal role during this critical period.

His dedication to teaching and patient care led him to join the faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he was appointed associate program director of the Grace hospital Internal Medicine residency program in 1991. Known for his profound respect for patients, Dr. Lackey's guiding principle during patient care was that "the patient is the center of the universe.”

Throughout his career, he tirelessly worked long hours, mentoring and training students and residents, even making himself available for home visits. He was actively involved in community health initiatives, providing free medical exams at health fairs and participating in healthcare informational programs in various settings.

Dr. Lackey's commitment extended beyond clinical practice as he served as the Chairman of the Ethics Committee and played a key role in the Sinai-Grace private practitioner group at DMC Lahser Medical Group. Additionally, he was a founding member of the AIMS (Academic Internal Medicine Specialists) group in 2007  which underscored his dedication to enhancing medical education and patient care.

Even in retirement (after 30 years of service), Dr. Lackey remained intermittently active in the outpatient setting, leaving behind a legacy of compassionate care, dedication to education, and a profound impact on the medical community. He served as President of the BMASF Inc. (Black Medical Association Scholarship Fund ) and later as a trustee of the fund which is now the BMA Endowment Award, benefiting minority medical students in need at Wayne State University.

All of his efforts are best described in the words he requested on his epitaph:

To God alone be the glory!
